King Charles and Queen Camilla had a whirlwind, four-day tour of the United States this week.

The visit commenced on Monday in Washington D.C.. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump hosted the royal couple for afternoon tea and provided a tour of the White House beekeeping operation. The following day, King Charles addressed a joint session of U.S. Congress, becoming only the second British monarch to do so, following Queen Elizabeth in 1991. (Interestingly, King Charles was only the second British monarch to deliver the “Throne Speech” at the State Opening of Parliament in Canada just last year, although there he is considered head of state as Canada is part of the Commonwealth.) The King and Queen were later hosted by the President and First Lady for a formal state dinner.

On Wednesday, in New York City, the King and Queen first visited the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, joined by local elected officials as well as families of the victims from the terrorist attacks and first responders. Queen Camilla had a solo engagement at the New York Public Library for a reception hosted by her charity, The Queen’s Reading Room. King Charles also met with a local nonprofit, Harlem Grown, which targets food insecurity by transforming abandoned urban lots into sustainable farms. They concluded their stay in Manhattan with a reception for Charles’s foundation, The King’s Trust, hosted by Christie’s.

King Charles and Queen Camilla ended their U.S. trip on Thursday in Virginia with several cultural events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States, including a community block party in the town of Front Royal and a trip to Shenandoah National Park. Queen Camilla also visited a farm geared toward horse racing. The King then departed for a solo trip to Bermuda, where he also serves as head of state.
