Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor can be called to the witness box to explain why he was given more than £1m by an alleged fraudster, a judge has ruled.
The former prince could be forced to attend London’s High Court to explain payments linked to Selman Turk, a former Goldman Sachs banker who is accused of stealing £40m from Nebahat Evyap Isbilen, a Turkish millionaire.
The former duke, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson and his daughters are said to have received payments of £1.4m relating to the case.
It was thought that they would avoid a court appearance after reaching a confidential settlement with Ms Isbilen in 2023.
But a High Court judge ruled on Friday that Mr Turk can issue the King’s brother with a witness summons to force him to explain why the payments were made at the trial, which is set to begin next month.
Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s legal team could still apply to have the summons set aside or varied.

If he is forced to give evidence, it will shed some light on the former prince’s financial situation, which has long been shrouded in secrecy.
It would add to the legal woes of Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, who is under police investigation for misconduct in public office relating to his relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He denies all wrongdoing.
Mr Turk strenuously denies all allegations against him. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Mr Mountbatten-Windsor or his family.
It is understood to be the first time since 1870 that a member of the Royal family will be subject to a witness summons.
That year, the then Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, was forced to deny having an affair with Lady Harriet Mordaunt in her divorce case.
This is a developing story. More to follow...
