COLLEGE PARK, GA — Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese picked up what would have been her eighth technical foul of the season on Friday, Aug. 28, during a 101-83 loss against the Portland Fire. The technical foul was later rescinded following the game, the WNBA confirmed to USA TODAY.Had the technical stood, it would have triggered an automatic one-game suspension. Reese's technical count for the season now stands at seven.
The Dream forward initially received the technical with 8:45 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Dream's matchup against Portland after she made contact with Carla Leite. Reese and the Fire guard got tangled up following a possession. Reese then pushed Leite as she was backing up, heading to the other end of the floor.
"I'm sure we'll appeal it. From my vantage point, it didn't look like something that was tech worthy. So, hopefully, it'll be rescinded, but I haven't had the benefit of watching it on film yet or anything like that. I think that's probably something that we're gonna try to get rescinded," Dream head coach Karl Smesko said postgame.
"We'll probably have a conversation (with Reese), but she's been really good from early in the season. She's really managed to ― she went a long time without getting a technical and really never deserved one. So, she was doing a great job. As I said, what I saw didn't look like (a technical). (It was) maybe a foul. Didn't look like a technical, but to be fair, I haven't looked at it on film yet. Hopefully this is something that'll be rescinded, and we'll have Angel's services for the Minnesota game (on Sunday)."
Under WNBA rules, a player or coach is automatically suspended for one game upon receiving their eighth technical foul during the regular season. Each additional technical comes with a $1,500 fine, and every two additional technical fouls during the regular season result in an additional one-game suspension.

The league may rescind every technical or flagrant foul assessed during each game. If the technical foul stood, Reese would have served her suspension for the Dream's matchup against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Reese previously exceeded the technical foul limit during the 2025 WNBA season while playing for the Chicago Sky and served out a one-game suspension on Sept. 5, 2025.
