On a recent episode of Pod Meets World, which is hosted by Fishel, Will Friedle and Rider Strong, costumer Julie Yang Silver talked about dressing the show's cast

Many '90s girls envied Topanga Lawrence's sense of style, but behind the scenes Danielle Fishel faced an uphill battle with some of the show's decision makers.
Costumer Julie Yang Silver, who joined the show's team during season 3, appeared as a guest on the latest episode of Pod Meets World, where she opened up about "heated discussions" around Topanga's wardrobe in the show's final season.
Fishel's cohosts, Will Friedle and Rider Strong, helmed the episode in her absence. Friedle noted, "I put on a bunch of weight towards the end [of the show]. Danielle put on a little bit of weight towards the end, but of course it was all about how she put on 'so much' weight."
Friedle recalled Fishel telling him about how she was asked to help pick out Topanga's wedding dress for the episode where she and Cory tie the knot, but quickly discovered, "None of them were allowed to be sleeveless.”

"She thinks that one of the reasons was because certain powers-that-be thought that she looked too heavy to show her arms bare," Friedle said, a thought Yang Silver confirmed.
"Yes. It was a constant conversation," she shared, noting that she and producer Karen MacKain objected to the commentary.
Yang Silver recalled another episode where she was asked to cover both Fishel and Trina McGee's arms as the girls dressed up to celebrate prom.
"Trina [McGee] was seven months pregnant and we were trying to hide that. And it was the same thing for Danielle, where [they said] she needed sleeves," she recalled. "I was like, 'No, that’s going to look ridiculous for prom.'"
"The thing was, Danielle was not heavy. That’s what I was trying to explain to them. I was like, 'She’s still a size 2, I don’t know what you guys are talking about,' " Yang Silver recalls.

The costumer noted that Fishel, who turned 19 during the final season, had "bloomed outwards" and because of her short stature, it appeared more like overall weight gain.
"Danielle wasn’t very tall, so if you are bustier and you’re not very tall, you’re going to look larger. But she wasn’t. You guys saw her every single day. She was not large at all," she reiterated.
Both Yang Silver and MacKain emphasized that no one of the higher-ups should ever bring the weight discussions to Fishel, in an attempt to protect her. That said, when asked if Yang Silver thought Fishel ever became aware of the discussions, she believed the actress did.
"I think she knew, but we really tried to hide that from her… Because she’s a teenager. That’s going to get in her head. That’s what Karen and I were both saying: She is a young woman, and that can do so much psychological damage, and it’s so not worth it. We were treading very, very lightly," she shared.

In an August 2024 episode of Pod Meets World, Friedle and Fishel talked about an episode written around both of their characters having gained weight.
"They called me into the office to tell me they were going to [write about it] – it wasn't really like they asked," she claimed. "Obviously, it was Will and I. Will had gained some weight. I had gained some weight. [And the writers said], 'Obviously, you guys have gained a little bit of weight, so we're gonna write an episode about it. And we just wanted you to know. And here's what it's gonna be. It's gonna be really funny.'"
She continued, "And so, I remember thinking, wow, these people think I've gained enough weight [that] we have to write an entire episode about my weight gain... And I have to say I'm fine with it, because they didn't even present to me another alternative. And even if they did, I probably wouldn't have felt comfortable being like, 'Yeah. I don't wanna do that.'"
Strong said that even if Fishel had spoken up, it likely would've turned out worse. "If you had canned [that idea] – if you had said, 'I'm not comfortable doing that – that would've been the story," he said. "It's such a weird situation, so much pressure."
Fishel admitted that the experience made it so that thoughts of her body and her weight were "just in my head forever."
