- Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and director David Frankel laud Lady Gaga's improvised cameo in *The Devil Wears Prada 2.*
- Gaga has two scenes in the sequel, including one where she performs an original song, "Shape of a Woman."
- Hathaway said Gaga "cared so much," while Streep praised the pop star's "beautiful instrument."
Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway have no poker face when it comes to praising Lady Gaga's partially improvised cameo in *The Devil Wears Prada 2*.
In a new interview with **, the returning stars and director David Frankel laud Gaga's two-scene appearance in the film, which (light spoilers ahead) sees the Grammy winner showing off an affected "nasty" side, as Streep calls it, in a scripted clash with *Runway* magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep) before hitting the stage at a fashion show to perform an original song called "Shape of a Woman."
"We had a lot of improvs, and again, that could've been quite a lengthy scene, because she was so nasty to me and I was so uncharacteristically nice to her," Streep said of the sequence, which builds on a joke referenced earlier in the film, that Priestly — the head of *Runway* magazine — and a fictionalized version of Gaga have a long-standing feud over a past coverage opportunity in the publication.
"It was fun. She's divine. I revere her as a musician, as a writer, as an actress," Streep, who has three Oscars, continues. "The [*House of*] *Gucci* movie? How great was she? Loved her, and such a good girl to come and do that for us."
Hathaway, who returns in the film as journalist Andy Sachs — a character that, after leaving *Runway* as Miranda's assistant in the first film, returns to help the magazine recover from a shocking downturn — also tells EW that Gaga "cared so much" about the movie.
"There was nothing like, 'You get one take, and then I'm out of here,'" Hathaway adds, while both stars praise Gaga for penning "Shape of a Woman" for the movie.

Sydney Sweeney cameo cut from 'Devil Wears Prada 2,' source explains why

"We got to hear her warm up, we got to hear the full acoustics," Hathaway says of filming the performance scene, as Streep praised the "beautiful instrument" of Gaga's voice.
Frankel explains how the cameo came together, with writer Aline Brosh McKenna leaving a portion of the script open to change as the production progressed.
"Aline wrote 'a pop star does a performance,' it's literally two lines in the script. The studio said, the script is so great, we really need to have a pop star, there's only probably one pop star that would make sense to us: If you got Gaga,'" Frankel recalls. "We sent her the script, and fortunately, she said great. She wrote a couple songs for us, which was so cool. We wanted them to have her appear in the movie as well, so Aline wrote a scene for her. She's a great actress, and she and Meryl had instant comedic chemistry."
Frankel confirms that Gaga "ad-libbed" her last line in the cameo, in which she turns to her assistant and snarls, "Who let her in here?" with regard to Miranda.
"It's tricky, because that scene is done in one shot, so their timing had to be impeccable there, which it was," Frankel finishes.

In addition to "Shape of a Woman," Gaga, who has an Oscar for writing *A Star Is Born*'s 2018 soundtrack duet "Shallow," also contributed songs "Glamorous Life" and "Runway" (with rapper Doechii) for the soundtrack.
*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is now playing in theaters nationwide.
