She plans to spend the summer at the beach and improving her pickleball game
Katie Couric is about to be a grandma again!
The 69-year-old journalist shared with PEOPLE that her daughter, Ellie, is pregnant with her second child, after welcoming son Jay in March 2024.
“My daughter, Ellie, is expecting her second child on June 5th,” Couric tells PEOPLE at the Runway for Recovery event on Thursday, April 30, at New York City’s Pier 60, where she was a spotlight model. “So it's gonna be a very exciting summer, both for Ellie and her husband, Mark.”
However, the proud grandma does have one concern when it comes to welcoming a new addition to the family.
“I'm not sure how exciting it's gonna be for Jay to welcome a new baby into the house,” she admits of the toddler. “TBD on that. But that's really, really exciting.”

The Runway Show, New York City is "a night of strength, remembrance, celebration, and critical fundraising for women and families impacted by metastatic breast cancer."
At the event, the mother of two said she’s enjoying putting extra emphasis on the milestone moments in her life.
“I've gotten to the point in my life where I really cherish and relish and appreciate happy occasions, like weddings and births and graduations,” she shares, adding that her late husband, Jay Monahan, had to miss out on these moments after his death from colon cancer at the age of 42 in 1998.

“My husband missed so many milestones with our daughters,” she says. “They were just 6 and 2 when Jay died, so he missed so much. He missed watching them grow into these incredible young women. He missed proms and parent teacher conferences and college acceptances and graduations and weddings — at least Ellie, not Carrie yet — and the birth of a grandson, Jay, who is 2, named after his late grandfather.”

These days, Couric isn’t taking family time for granted.
“I'm just grateful and grateful that everyone is doing well and feeling well and has found fulfillment and purpose,” she says. “When you experience loss, like my husband and my sister, and I've had many friends who I've lost, it does give you a greater appreciation for every single moment... and every happy occasion.”
As for her personal plans for the summer, Couric says she intends to be at the beach often and to continue working on her pickleball game.
“I'm gonna be playing a lot of pickleball too, because I am a pretty good pickleball player,” she said, joking, “I do say so myself.”
Couric is mom to daughters Ellie, 34, and Carrie, 30, with her late husband, Monahan. She remarried John Molner in 2014, who has two kids from a previous marriage.
