We won’t be seeing a once-prominent rapper in public for a while. Pras Michel has turned himself in to the police to begin a 14-year prison sentence. The former Fugees member was convicted of numerous charges in 2023, including conspiracy, concealment of material facts, and witness tampering.
He was also found guilty of serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power. This was in relation to an international conspiracy involving Jho Low, a Malaysian businessman. Pras reportedly received over $21 million in transfers.

Pras may be doing time, but that’s by no means an admission of guilt. In a statement to Rolling Stone, the rapper’s spokesperson Erica Dumas notes that although turning himself in was painful, Pras intends to fight back. The “charges that led to his conviction are being vigorously contested on appeal,” read the statement. It goes on to say that “his rights were violated and the truth was obscured.”

A judge announced his lengthy sentence in November. Originally, he was to begin his time behind bars in January, though that was later delayed until March. That was further pushed back by another 30 days. Regarding the sentence, his spokesperson adds that Pras will “fight it on the inside” with this appeal. Upon receiving the money from Jho, Pras reportedly paid $865,000 of it to support Barack’s 2012 campaign.
Erica recently attended a Kanye West concert in Los Angeles last month, alongside Dave Chappelle and Erykah Badu. Pras’s former Fugees bandmate, Lauryn Hill, was on hand for the show as a guest for Kanye. Pras previously sued Lauryn for fraud and breach of contract. This came following the cancellation of a Fugees shortened 2023 tour and an anniversary tour a year later. He later dropped that lawsuit.
