- *The Devil Wears Prada 2 *stars and director tell* * if they'd return for a third film.

- "I hope they don't wait 20 years," Meryl Streep jokes.

- "If they exhume us," Stanley Tucci adds of a potential *Devil Wears Prada 3*.

The flames of fashion have barely cooled on *The Devil Wears Prada 2*'s theatrical bow, but the sequel's cast and crew are already looking forward to a potential third film in the series.

When ** asks returning stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and director David Frankel if there will be a *Devil Wears Prada 3*, they remain optimistic.

“I hope they don’t wait 20 years!" Streep, 76, jokes to EW of the time between the original 2006 film and its successor — a sentiment that Tucci echoes in a separate interview.

“I don’t think we can do it in another 20 years. We have to do it sooner than that, because I’ll be dead,” he jokes, adding that a third film would be possible "if they exhume us" from the grave.

“We believe in letting a lot of time sizzle between these movies,” Blunt says, though Tucci adds that a third film "could be fun" — but, as Blunt puts it, she and Tucci have "more to do together" in a third film, as their characters were largely separated from each other in the sequel.

Blunt observes, "We love what we got to do, but we didn’t get enough to do together," and that the costars (who are also related through marriage, as Tucci wed Blunt's sister, Felicity, in 2012) wanted "a little more to chew on together" in the second film.

Hathaway suggests that *The Devil Wears Prada 2*'s box office success will determine whether or not they return for another installment.

“I hope so, I feel like there’s more road to explore," she says. "But, we’ll probably have a better idea of that [when the film comes out]."

Frankel, who helmed the 2006 film to global grosses of $327 million and two Oscar nominations (one for Streep, one for Patricia Field's costume design), says "there's a life for the characters beyond this story" in the sequel.

"Let's see what happens. It’s show business. It’s anybody’s guess. We said no 20 years ago, and here we are," Frankel admits. "I don’t want to say yes now. They are very rich characters, they’re amazing actors, there's great screenwriting, so I could imagine that these characters might live on."

In an exclusive 2021 oral history interview with EW celebrating the film's 15th anniversary, Frankel revealed that conversations for a sequel began around the time of the first movie's release.

"[The studio] didn't *ask* for [a sequel]. We had a meeting where we said, 'What could we do if there was a sequel?' Maybe it was stupid; we felt like, No, this story has been told," Frankel said at the time. "Lauren [Weisberger] eventually wrote another book following up 15 years later. We came to the same conclusion, that just following the characters wouldn't be the same."

*The Devil Wears Prada 2* is now playing in theaters nationwide.
