Heather Emerson paid $15,000 for a facelift in Turkey, part of the $27,000 overall trip cost

As a teenager, she served as a medic in the United States Air Force and then spent a year in prison, all of which inspired Emerson's plastic surgery

Her facelift took a toll on her physically and emotionally, but she opens up about why it was the next step in her transformation journey

One woman's plastic surgery journey overseas follows years of trauma.

Texas entrepreneur Heather Emerson, who is based in Austin, was 41 when she underwent a facelift in Turkey. In an interview with PEOPLE, she says the transformation was not just about vanity, but about aligning with the woman she had "fought so hard to become."

She dropped out of high school and joined the United States Air Force at 17, working as a medic. "I was trying to survive emotionally," she recalls of her employment, during which she claims she was a victim of sexual assault.

She received a bad conduct discharge for a controlled substance violation with ecstasy. In a post shared to her LinkedIn this year, she also revealed that she served 12 months in prison for a drug charge and began the process for a presidential pardon in 2023.

"My story is surrounded by a lot of sadness, trauma and injustice," she says. "I spent the next two decades rebuilding my life while also processing what happened to me. I am still processing that trauma."

A facelift, she explains, was "not just about aging. It was deeply personal."

"A lot of what I carried from that period stayed with me for years. I did not always have the language for it, but I carried it in my body, in my nervous system and in the way I saw myself. My face was very heavy-looking, and I believe it was from years of holding those emotions inside."

Emerson, now 42, began contemplating plastic surgery in 2018, but over the years experimented with less invasive forms of cosmetic enhancements and procedures, including Botox, fillers and laser treatments. "Those things helped, but they did not address the deeper feeling I had when I looked in the mirror," she explains.

But soon, she wanted a change that would give her a more "rested, lighter" appearance that aligned with the inner healing and life improvement she'd been working on.

Getting a facelift in the United States was not on Emerson's priority list, and she extensively researched various medical tourism spots. She landed on Turkey, but the decision was not made casually, she says. "I thought about safety, language barriers, aftercare, complications and what would happen if something went wrong. I also understood that surgery overseas can come with risks."

She prepared for all scenarios and made sure she invested her time, money and life into a trustworthy surgeon. Still, there was one thing that shocked her coming out of the $15,000 surgery (a partial cost of her $27,000 trip abroad).

"The emotional impact surprised me the most. I expected to look different, but I did not expect to feel so different," says Emerson, adding that the "physical pain" of the procedure was "nearly unbearable."

"The swelling is real and lasts longer than I expected. It can be strange to look healed on the outside while still feeling sensations, tightness or numbness underneath. It is a reminder that this is real surgery, not a beauty treatment."

On Instagram, where she has over 16,000 followers, Emerson shared an unfiltered look at the immediate results of her surgery, including clips of her with swollen, red eyelids and bruising.

Her feelings towards her new look couldn't be more positive now. "When I look at my face now after my facelift, it feels lighter. It feels unburdened by some of the heaviness I still carry from what happened to me. When I look in the mirror, I see the girl from 20 years ago who should have had a different life. In some ways, I feel like I get to live that life now."

"When I look in the mirror, I see someone who survived, rebuilt and is still here. I see a woman who gets to live a life that once felt impossible," she adds.

Emerson is "open" to the idea of future surgeries, "but I am not in a rush," she says. "My goal is not to chase perfection. My goal is to feel good in my body and make decisions from a place of empowerment, not insecurity."
