Cooper family patriarch George Cooper Sr., played by Lance Barber, returned to spinoff Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage on Thursday, April 30

"I feel honored by the fact that George gets to live beyond his death in the show," Barber told TV Insider

Young Sheldon's George Cooper Sr. is back on screen.

On the Thursday, April 30, episode of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Lance Barber makes his long-awaited return as the late dad from Young Sheldon, as he visits his TV son Montana Jordan (Georgie) in another dream sequence.

His return was already teased by the cast, with actors sharing glimpses of Jordan, Barber, Raegan Revord (Missy Cooper) and Zoe Perry (Mary Cooper) at a Cooper family reunion back in February. Of course, fans figured out that George Sr. — who previously made a cameo in season 1 — wouldn't have much of a physical presence in Georgie & Mandy given that his character died toward the end of Young Sheldon, but Barber still felt "honored" that the character has more story to tell.

"I feel honored by the fact that George gets to live beyond his death in the show, even when it’s not a dream sequence, just the fact that he’s there and referred to and on the minds of his family still, and the writers have made sure that that is somewhat of an element and force for Georgie means the world to me to continue that way," Barber, 52, told TV Insider.

Barber added that being around his fellow castmates made it easy to get back into character and that the "dynamics fall right back into place, even if we haven’t seen each other in a while." As for the live studio audience, they were pretty thrilled to see him, too.

"The audience is clearly fans of Young Sheldon who are coming to see Georgie & Mandy’s, and so I get an uproarious applause," he said, laughing.

"I get approached in such meaningful ways by people who want to tell me how much they were moved by George’s death. I like to ask people if they cried when I died and see what their response is, and some people say, 'Yes,' and then some people just offer how it was personal to them. I get that a fair amount from someone who’s lost a parent, and the way that episode of losing George landed on them, that’s always pretty meaningful and moving for me to hear."

Young Sheldon, the spin-off of the Big Bang Theory led by Iain Armitage, ran for seven seasons from 2017 to 2024 on CBS. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage returned for its second season on CBS in February.

Barber also spoke with TV Line about his return, sharing that it "means the world to me" that his character still serves as a moral compass for Jordan's character. "I, Lance the actor, get to live through that character in that way," he said. "That's significant to Georgie, but also clearly to the audience. And it's something not just sentimental, but identifiable for so many people — who we look to for guidance, even when those people may no longer be with us."

He added, "And they might even be idealized, maybe even a little wrong, but they're still the foundation of how we move forward. So to play with that, to give Georgie that, and to continue to be that element of this new show — to live on through that — is wonderful."

Barber's costars are also happy to see him with the family again, even if briefly. Jordan, 23, told Extra that he's "glad they're keeping him alive a little bit" and that he thinks the character would be "proud" of his son if he were still alive in the universe.

“I think he'd be proud of him,” Jordan said. "Georgie's got a good head on his shoulders, you know. He's trying to run this business and keep this business off the ground and what he's doing his father would be very proud of him.”

New episodes of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage arrive Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
